Commissioning Composers
Dr. Lynne Morrow has been a champion of composers throughout her career as a performer and as a conductor. Recently, she has commissioned composer Michael Roberts to create a new choral orchestral Mass. This new work, "Mass for Freedom," uses African American Spirituals which were protest songs during the 1960's Civil Rights era as its source material.
Dr. Morrow was dramaturg and consultant for a new opera, "Dark River," based on the life of the voting rights activist, Fannie Lou Hamer. This project was supported by Opera America.
Dr. Morrow has been working with the composer of a new commission by Oakland Symphony, based on the 1936 auto workers strike.
